Octopretzel is a tangle of Bay Area musicians and educators – friends that originally came together for backyard jams. Over the years, as they developed their careers and grew their families, the music they created together continued to inspire them, and thus they formed the band. The name Octopretzel was coined by one of their then 4yr old kids, and it stuck.

Their music, comprised of original songs as well as traditional favorites, is whimsical and fun, with an underlying sensitivity for nature, animals, feelings, and connection. Best described as folk music, their songs cross generations and genres, weaving together many different musical styles, instruments and themes. Their intention is to create music that can be enjoyed by humans of all ages – children, and their parents too!

Octopretzel has been making music for over 15 years, and has formed and re-formed with some different band members over that time. The current band make-up is:

Melita Silberstein: lead vocals and guitar
Jen Miriam Altman: percussion and puppets
David Doostan: backup vocals
Carrie Staller: percussion and vocals
Casey Yurrow: mandolin

Octopretzel has played at countless venues in and around the Bay Area such as the historic Freight and Salvage Coffee House, the Bay Area Discovery Museum, The Charles Shultz Museum, The Ashkenaz, The Contemporary Jewish Museum, Fairyland Oakland, Pandora Headquarters, Twitter Headquarters, La Pena Cultural Center, and many many more. 

They also regularly play at West Coast festivals such as Kidpalooza, SF Earth Day in the Park, The Mill Valley Arts and Culture Fest, the Bay Area Jewish Music Festival and Kidstock, among lots of other city events, street fairs and family friendly shindigs.
