I have been singing for as long as I can remember... my dad began recording me
when I was two years old, singing everything from "It’s a Small World"
to "Boogie Fever." I grew up in a family that always encouraged creativity.
My parents and two older sisters emigrated from South Africa to St. Louis, Missouri,
where I was born and raised. After leaving St. Louis, I lived in Austin TX, Boulder
CO, and Israel, before moving to Berkeley, California where I now live with my
husband, our little girl, and our cat.
In Boulder, I studied Eco-Psychology and Religion at the Naropa Institute,
earning my degree in 2000. I also recorded my first solo CD Shalem
that year. When I moved to the Bay Area, I began working with children, first
as a teacher in a Waldorf-inspired pre-school, and then as a music specialist.
Currently, I work as a music teacher in several schools and I lead music circles
for young children and parents, while also writing, recording, and performing
my own music.
In 2001-2004 I traveled and sang with Kid Kaleidoscope, a children’s
music/puppet troupe that has played around the Bay Area, and at festivals such
as EarthDance, the Oregon Country Faire, and the Harmony Festival. I was also
a member of Ya Elah, a women’s vocal ensemble that integrates
Balkan and Bulgarian musical arrangements with sacred texts of many traditions.
In 2006, I met Ben Krames of JungleShack Studios, who produced my 2007 album
Delicate Web, as well as my current album of lullabies.
The music I write and play spans many genres and speaks to people of all ages.
I manage and sing in a bluegrass folk band for children, called Octopretzel,
that plays around the Bay Area. My husband and I sing together in ceremonies
of many kinds, such as weddings, Universalist/Unitarian church services, Native
American rituals, and Shabbat services at Jewish congregations. I’m in
a singer/songwriter vocal trio called Woven Voices, with two other
women who seek to create social change through song. My music also has been
used at yoga and dance classes, at births, and even by chaplains in hospices.
My husband David and I met in 2001; on our first date we played music together
in the forest. We were married in 2003, and had our daughter Leilah Meadow in
2005. She is a bright, warm and creative soul that never ceases to inspire me.
David works as an ER doc and in his time off, loves to surf.
I believe that music has the power to transform… the listener as well
as the performer. I try to write and play music that speaks to a timeless place
in us, that seeks to remind us of the magic in this world. Woven throughout
my music is a vision of inter-connectedness, both with one another and with
all of life on this planet… something so easily forgotten.
